The Society of Heart Valve Disease Biennial Meeting took place in Barcelona, Spain, on June 25-28, 2011 in conjunction with the Heart Valve Society of America, in the “Palacio de Congresos de Cataluña”.
The SHVD meeting welcome was done by Dr. Pomar and Dr. Bonow from Chicago and 450 cardiac surgeons attended from Europe, USA and Asia.
There were 6-8 daily sessions with 5-7 presentations in each one, and clinical data from clinical single and/or multicenter studies were presented over those. Some of the subjects they talked about were the biological valves, percutaneous valve surgery, homografts, robotic surgery, valve repair and replacement.
The STS and Euroscore scales overestimation about the complications risk and mortality was remarked during several presentations. On the other hand some of the speakers attached importance to avoid as much as possible the patient mismatch mainly on those patients with severe insufficiency.
